DEAR SENATOR:

JUNE 2007 MARKS the 40th year of Israel’s illegal occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights. As King Abdullah of Jordan said in his address to Congress on March 7, the suffering, dispossession and statelessness of the Palestinian people is the core issue in the Middle East. Four decades of occupation is too long.

In 2002 the Arab League unanimously approved the Arab Peace Initiative which provides a map for reconciliation, normalization and human rights for Israelis and Palestinians. The Arab League recently reaffirmed its peace offer and warned that the door to a peaceful solution is closing. The Arab Peace Initiative continues to stand as the best alternative to escalation and despair.

Please support the peace plan and end the unjust economic sanctions in the occupied
Palestinian territories.

“THE WELLSPRING OF regional division, the
source of resentment and frustration far beyond, is the denial of justice and peace in
Palestine...I come here today as your friend to
tell you that this is the core issue. And this core issue is not only producing severe consequences for our region, it is producing severe consequences for our world.…

“The Arab states...unanimously approved
the Arab Peace Initiative. It puts forward a path for both sides, to achieve what people want and need: a collective peace treaty with Israel and normal relations with every Arab state...[in exchange for] an agreed solution to the refugee problem, a withdrawal from Arab territories occupied since 1967, and a sovereign, viable, and independent Palestine.”

—King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in his address to Congress, March 7, 2007.
