DEAR SENATOR:
URGE YOU TO CALL on President George W. Bush to start bringing U.S. troops in Iraq home now. Our presence there is doing little to stop the chaos and sectarian strife. Instead, it is fanning the flames of violence and tarnishing our standing in the world.
We are losing brave soldiers and wasting precious resources on this terrible war—which costs U.S. taxpayers $720 million every day, money which could be better used to help the 7.7 million American families living in poverty. A public opinion poll released Sept. 13 by the Associated Press shows that nearly two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of the war.
President Bush talks about “successes” in Iraq, but let’s call a spade a spade—the U.S. war in Iraq is a disastrous failure. Let’s leave Iraq and start focusing on justice, peace, education and health care here at home.

AS THE U.S. occupation of Iraq continues, so does the horrible sectarian violence, killing on average 36 Iraqis a day. Fatal suicide bombs, car bombs, and roadside bombing attacks have doubled in the last year, from 712 to 1,476. The presence of 168,000 U.S. troops in Iraq today has failed to prevent such violence or halt an escalation toward civil war.
President George W. Bush says he will bring 5,700 U.S. troops home from Iraq by Christmas, and more by July, bringing the number of troops fighting in Iraq to pre-surge levels of about 132,000. Polls show that most Americans disapprove of Bush’s handling of the war, which has cost the lives of more than 3,700 U.S. troops, and about half a trillion dollars. Bush’s plan is far removed from the desires of the American people, most of whom support a complete withdrawal starting now, and ending soon. |
